Day 74 - Double Post

Sometimes I get excited about a picture, and I'm kind of excited about this one, hence the double post for today. I guess that means I should wait before I do a post for the day.

Well, Clint and I made hamburgers for dinner tonight, and it was amazing! Everything was from scratch. He read yesterday, an article about how to grill the perfect hamburger, etc. So we tried it. First, they used pizza dough to make their buns and then grilled the beef a certain way. I want to talk about the pizza dough buns.

They were AMAZING! The pizza dough is awesome because it's crusty on the outside, but soft on the inside. The bread doesn't get all soggy like with other buns. And  with other homemade bun recipes, all the insides would slide out, etc. But everything stayed inside, it was beautiful! We used my mom's pizza dough recipe, that I absolutely love. It's so tasty. I mean, look at this pic! This hamburger looks awesome. We also grilled some broccoli and cauliflower, and that was also delicious. I love summer grilling!

So I kind of got excited about it, and had to do another post today. It was just really fun for us to try something new and find something we both liked a lot. I had tried another "bun" recipe I found on pinterest, and it wasn't as good as the pizza dough buns. I just really like making bread from scratch. It tastes so good!

Here's my mom's recipe. I actually halved it for today because we only needed 3 buns - and it made rather large buns still. Plus it's versatile. I've used it for ham and cheese spiders, for halloween, and for hamburger buns and pizza, and pizza balls. Enjoy!

6 C flour
1 1/2 t salt
3 T oil
1/2 C warm water
1 1/2 C water
1  1/2 T yeast

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 c warm water. While yeast is dissolving, put in a large bowl, 3 cups flour, 1 1/2 t salt, 3 T oil and 1 1/2 C water. Add yeast to flour mixture, stir until smooth. Add the remaining 3 cups of flour slowly until it mixes well into a ball. (I never add the full 3 cups, because then its too dry. It's usually around 1 1/2 to 2 cups more of flour for me.) Knead dough for about 5-10 min. Cover and let rise while you prepare pizza toppings. For these buns, I let them rise to however big I wanted the buns (I think it was about 20 min) and then cooked it. Bake on 425 degrees until brown on the bottom, or top (in these buns cases). So it's about 30 minutes? I'm horrible, I don't time things. I wait till I smell them, and then I know they are or are close to  being done.
