Appendicitis

It has been quite the week for us here. And I want to document it for when I scrapbook these pics - keyword "when". Ha ha!

Where to begin.......it all started last Sunday when Clint was urged by family, and myself, to go to the emergency room because he was having abdominal pain. You see, he had been having abdominal pain for about a week and a half, but we thought nothing of it because it wasn't severe. We thought maybe he pulled some muscles doing sit ups, or maybe it was gas. And the pain would come and go. And on a scale of 1-10, it was probably a 4ish. Then on Friday and Saturday he didn't feel any pain at all. But Sunday it started getting worse. About a 7 was when it was the worst, but then it would go away to a 2 or 3ish pain level. Just back and forth. Well, when the pain was a 7 Clint started googling what might be wrong. He saw appendicitis, but he didn't have all the symptoms.

We went to his family's for dinner, and basically told everyone what was going on, and everyone said he needed to go to the ER. I was thinking instacare, but everyone else said instacare was a waste of time. His dad thought it was appendicitis because he had it when he was younger. We came home, and put the kids to bed and then we decided to go to the ER. Better to be safe than sorry. His sister came and stayed with our kids and we went to the ER.

As Clint was explaining his symptoms to the doctor, he and the nurse kind of looked at us like we were silly for coming in because he wasn't vomiting, he didn't have a fever with the ab pain, it had been festering for a week and a half, and appendicitis usually happens within 24 hours. So we kind of felt stupid for going because Clint didn't have all the usual symptoms with appendicitis. Even the doctor said he didn't know what was wrong, but "we'll see". And the doctor said "We can do a cat scan if you want". That's the only way to tell if someone has appendicitis. We were like "you're the doctor, should we get one?" It was just weird that no one seemed to believe us. Anyways, we obviously got the cat scan because we knew something was wrong, whether it was appendicitis, an ulcer, or whatever.

So we waited an hour or so, and then the doctor came in with a completely shocked look on his face and said he needed to get his appendix out that night. Crazy, right? We weren't stupid for coming in!

We drove to the University of Utah hospital and got him all situated there (around midnight), and then I came home because Alexis was going to wake up around 4 or 5, like she always does, to nurse. I didn't get good sleep that night. Clint text me at 1:30 with updates, the doctor called me at 3:30 am to tell me the surgery was over, and Alexis woke up at 5 to eat, then Clint text me at 6:20 am when he woke up from the anesthesia. Which by the way, the text he sent me was HILARIOUS!! This is what he sent to me - his exact words. "Im donr and in my room.com it hurtd and in high as a kite"  Ha ha ha! Ya, he was extremely loopy, and, as he put it, high. :)

Jonas's aunt watched Jonas on Monday while Alexis and I went to the hospital until they discharged Clint. So Clint had a tear on his appendix, but the reason why it didn't completely rupture was because he had a calcium deposit blocking the tear. The surgeon doctor said that's probably why Clint didn't feel any pain on Friday or Saturday because that was when it tore so it relieved some pressure. All the doctors were kind of shocked because he "didn't come in earlier". They were surprised he dealt with the pain that long. But the thing was it wasn't extremely painful for him until Sunday, so that's why we didn't think to go in earlier. Anyways, all the doctors acted like he was a miracle or something. Maybe it was. The calcium deposit made it so he didn't have to stay in the hospital for a week.

But ever since then it's been crazy at our house. Clint can't lift anything heavier than 10 pounds, which rules out Alexis, so I've been doing everything- all day and all night. I didn't realize how much he helped around the house until he couldn't help, if that makes sense. I'm exhausted. It's weird because he's here, but it's like he's not because he can't do anything. Poor guy is sore, and his medicine (similar to loritab) makes him loopy and he can't think straight all the time. He walks like a grandpa. And deep inside I think to myself, "now you know what it's like to have a c-section. A small glimpse." ha ha! But he's getting better. He can get up and down better which helps because I can set Alexis by him to keep her happy while I get other things done, like cleaning, cooking, helping Jonas, etc.

We did go to the park today for a bit. Jonas loved that. And Clint enjoyed getting out, but he got really tired and sore afterwards. He can only handle so much physical activity and then he's done for a couple hours.

And the ladies he works with - they are all women about the age of his mother, and they all take care of him like he's their son - sent him a card and an edible arrangement. So nice, right? He works with some nice ladies.

He goes back to work Monday, so I hope he feels better by then so he can get stuff done. And all of that is why I haven't done anything on my blog till now. Good times, right? Makes me realize you never know what's going to happen. Things can change in a matter of an hour.

And Alexis really loved eating the chocolate covered strawberries. :)

  1. So interesting! What nice co-workers!! Clint must have a high tolerance for pain too!! I'm glad he's feeling better.
